Zimbabweans already know how to do this. When a child is on the way, the community does not send a cheque and wish the parents luck. People arrive with what they have: a cot, a bag of nappies, advice, an afternoon of help. Nobody carries the whole weight, and between them the household is equipped. A Business Shower applies exactly that logic to a member starting or growing an enterprise.
A member who is launching or expanding a venture is hosted at a gathering of fellow members. Before the event they share what the business actually needs — not a vague wish list, but specifics: shelving, a second-hand display fridge, a reliable supplier of packaging, someone who understands licensing, three hours of help on a Saturday. Members then bring what they can from that list. What arrives is rarely cash, and that is deliberate.
Most small businesses in Zimbabwe do not fail for lack of capital alone. They fail because the founder is solving every problem for the first time, by themselves, under time pressure. A loan addresses the capital; it does nothing about the isolation. A Business Shower attacks the second problem directly, converting the cooperative’s most underused asset — the accumulated experience and surplus equipment sitting inside its own membership — into a launch package. For the cooperative the cost is close to nothing. For the member it can be the difference between opening and not opening.
There is a self-interested case too, and we make it openly. Members’ savings fund members’ loans. A business that survives its first year repays its loan, keeps contributing, and strengthens the pool that everyone else borrows from. A business that fails in month four does the opposite. Helping a fellow member succeed is not only neighbourly — it protects the value of your own stake. And the reciprocity is real: the member who brings shelving this quarter is often the member being hosted the next.
Business Showers are open to active members in good standing. If you are preparing to launch or expand and would like to be hosted, or you would like to contribute to the next one, speak to us at Suite 4, Jacaranda Mews, call +263 78 557 7447, or send us a message through the contact page. It is the clearest expression we have of what the tagline actually means. Together we can.
