There is nothing inherently good or bad about borrowing. A loan is simply money moved forward in time, and you pay for the privilege. Whether that trade is wise depends almost entirely on what the money does once it arrives. Over and over, the difference between members whose loans build something and members who end up trapped comes down to a handful of habits.
Borrow for things that outlive the repayment. This is the single most useful test. Will what you are buying still be generating value, saving you money, or standing in your yard after the final instalment is paid? A borehole, a welding machine, a qualification, a roof — yes. A weekend, a wardrobe, a party — no. This does not mean those things are not worth having. It means they should be funded from savings, not from credit.
Know the total cost before you sign, not after. The instalment is not the price. The price is the total amount repayable: principal, plus every month of interest, plus fees. You should be able to say exactly what a loan costs before you commit — which is precisely why we put a loan amortization calculator on this website and let you print the full schedule. If a lender cannot show you that table, that is information in itself.
Match the term to the life of the thing, and protect one instalment in advance. Do not take a twelve-month loan for stock that turns over in six weeks. The right answer is the shortest term whose instalment you can comfortably pay in a bad month, not an average one. Then, before the first instalment falls due, put one full instalment aside and do not touch it. That single buffer is the difference between a late month and a default — and your record is what determines the size and price of your next loan.
Never borrow to repay a borrowing. Taking a new loan to service an old one feels like relief and is almost always the beginning of a spiral, because you have added cost without adding income. If an instalment is becoming unmanageable, talk to us early. A cooperative has far more room to restructure with a member who comes forward in month three than with one who disappears until month nine.
